Forgotten War

Kabul, August 2016

October 7th 2016 marks the 15th anniversary of the longest war in American history. The current situation in Afghanistan is worse than at any time since 2001, when the U.S. invasion helped oust the Taliban from power. Fighting between the Taliban and government forces in Afghanistan escalated in 2015, today they hold more Afghan territory than before and the number of civilians killed in Afghanistan hits half-year record in 2016 according to a report published by the United Nations. The upsurge in violence had devastating consequences for civilians, with suicide bombings, improvised explosive devices and targeted attacks by the Taliban and other insurgents causing 70 percent of all civilian casualties.
